Why Pilates Was Never Meant to Be a 'Body'
Recently, during a conversation about mat pilates classes here in Manhattan Beach, someone mentioned wanting the "Pilates body." .. How much they'd love to have it and honestly, it got me thinking.
Pilates has never been a body for me. Rather a way of thinking and relating.
When I'm doing, or teaching private mat pilates, my mind isn't on how I look. It's on the system:
How much of the body is moving.
How my mind is connecting to my body.
How accurately I can engage and perform each exercise to actually get the benefit from it.
Mat Pilates has never been about being smaller, more toned, or fitting a certain shape.
“Mat pilates has shaped the way I relate to what my body is doing, and, importantly, helped me understand why it's doing it.”
Pilates Is a Process, Not a Result
Here's the thing about a "pilates body": it treats pilates like a finish line. In that if you do enough classes, you will hit some aesthetic outcome, arrive.
But that's not how Mat Pilates actually works AND it is not why it's worth doing.
Mat Pilates is a practice in relating to your body differently.
A practice centred in building strength through control, not effort for effort's sake.
It teaches us to move with precision instead of just moving more.
Instilling the ongoing work of noticing:
"Where is my ribcage, Is my pelvis doing that, Am I actually connected right now or just going through the motions?"
That's not something you finish.
Mat Pilates is something you keep doing, session after session, because the relationship keeps deepening the longer you stay with it.
What Mat Pilates Actually Gives You
Not a body. A different relationship with the one you already have.
A stronger connection between your mind and your movement
The ability to move with intention, not just intensity
Strength that's built through precision and control
A body you understand from the inside, not one you're just observing from the outside
None of that shows up as a before-and-after photo. All of it shows up in how you move through the rest of your life.
The Point Isn't to Arrive
If you come to mat pilates chasing a body, you'll always be somewhere else. Waiting for a result that hasn't happened yet.
If you come to mat pilates to build a relationship with how you move, you're already there. Every class.
That's the shift. Not what you'll look like when you're "done."
There is no done.
There's just getting better at listening to, and working with, the body you're already in.
This is the work I love doing with people.
Not sculpting a body, but helping them come home to the one they already have.
If that is what you're looking for, I offer private Mat Pilates sessions in Manhattan Beach and the South Bay.
